The number 1 reason why you binge food…
Deprivation leads to excess.
The reason you binge eat is because your body feels deprived.
That’s it. That’s the reason.
Let’s dig in and understand that and learn how to stop bingeing.
Let’s take this concept to other areas of our lives:
when you hold your breath to see how long you can hold it; you gasp for air afterwards. You deprived your lungs of fresh air, and when finally allowed access again, your lungs attempt to get as much as possible until it is satisfied.
when you haven’t had water in a long time, you gulp it down.
We don’t give ourselves a hard time for recuperating loss after a period of being deprived. No, we recognize and acknowledge that our body had been without and needs to get back to normal.
YET.
When it’s nourishment that we’ve deprived our body. Actual fuel the body needs to function. When we have deprived our body of fuel, and the body attempts to recuperate loss; we shame it. We give ourselves a hard time for needing to recover loss. Not okay!
But the issue is not that we shame our body and ourselves for the need to recover loss (although that’s a huge issue- we shouldn’t shame our body for working as it was designed.
The issue is the action that causes the problem- deprivation! Depriving your body of its physical needs is what causes this entire binge / shame cycle. Skipping meals, eating small amounts at meals, eating low carb, intermittent fasting; all of these popular, society-approved, methods of weight loss are actually creating more harm in your body.
If you find yourself bingeing food, eating more than you think is appropriate, feeling uncontrolled around food, etc. Look back on how you fed yourself prior to the binge. Chances are- you deprived yourself and the binge is your body’s attempt at getting back the losses.
So what to do? EAT! Eat regularly and consistently throughout the day. Stop skipping meals. Stop holding back because you think a food is “bad.”
Fuel yourself!
